Rottweilers - Top 5 Facts You Need To Know
- That Red Tile. Huh, what? The name Rottweiler comes from a town in Germany called Rottweil. At one time that town was built on the site of ancient Roman baths. This particular bath had red tiles in it, which gave the town it's name - "das Rot Wil' or "the red tile".
- The Rottie breed almost disappeared in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Simply put it was cheaper and easier to fed and train smaller dogs to do the jobs that were typically reserved for Rottweilers. Luckily some dedicated and passionate breeders kept the line going. Today, Rottweilers are one of the most popular breeds in the US, reaching as high as #4 on the AKC list in 1998
- A-B-C. Can you spell the name? The rottie could have one of the most misspelled names of any dog breed. Common misspellings include Rottweiller, Rottwieler, Rottwiler or Rotweiler.
- The official breed standard for Rottweilers is "calm, confident and courageous dog". A far cry from the stereotypical view that many people today have of an aggressive, ferocious dog.
- Rotties Purr. Ok, maybe it's not quite purring, but they do have a low grumbling sound that they use to "talk". It's not to be confused with a growl however.
