What information should you include on your dog's personalized dog collar?

by Alisha Navarro 18 Mar 2026

With a personalized dog collar, your dog's information is always visible.  No need to get close to your dog to flip a tag and read the information on it, you can often see the information from several feet away.

The Must-Have Information for Any Dog Collar

Just like we stated in our article about "what to include on your dog's ID tag", we prefer simplicity and a phone number is the absolute most important thing to include on your dog's personalized collar.

That phone number is going to help the person who finds your dog contact you and safely reunite you with your furry family member.

Some people like to also include the dog's name and this can be helpful if your dog knows and responds to their name.  It could help the person who finds your dog call out to them and hopefully your dog will respond and come to them.

What NOT to include on your dog's personalized collar

Take a moment and think through the (scary) details of what would happen if your dog got loose.  You are likely going to be out searching, so the most important information to include is a phone number where you can be reached even if you aren't at home.

Anything extra that is added to the collar runs the risk of making it more difficult to read (especially important if your dog is shy or likely to run away from someone they don't know).  For this reason, we really don't recommend including your address, cute "please return me to my home" type sayings, or anything that makes the text hard to read.

Font size, spacing, and contrast are three important decisions to make.

For font size and spacing decisions, the bigger and easier to read, the better.  That's our complete opinion.

If you live in a heavily wooded area, consider a reflective material or something that stands out in a sea of trees.  If you live in the desert or in the city, or anywhere with the same colors over and over, consider that in your color choices.

Personalized Collars vs. Dog ID Tags: What's Better?

It is really a matter of personal preference.  Some people like to have a collar for every season (or for every day of the week) and in that case, you are likely better off with a custom Dog Tag with an easy system for switching tags so that you can let your dog wear whatever collar is in season.

Some people prefer to keep things streamlined, simple, and quiet (no tags jingling) and want to have their dog collars personalized with their dog's information right on the collar.

Whatever you choose, Hot Dog Collars has you covered with custom made personalized dog collars as well as custom Dog Tags for any occasion!
